| Praise Him In The Storm |
 |
I recently took my family to the "SonShine" Christian music festival in Wilmar, Minnesota.
On the second night of the festival, the last band of the evening, "Casting Crowns", performed my favorite song called "Praise You In This Storm"...
Fifteen minutes later a looming thunderstorm caused their concert to end a few songs early!
My wife and I quickly headed back to our tent and made it just before the rain started to pour.
Shortly after getting back, with the rain and wind raging and testing the limits of our five person tent, our youngest daughter "Tori" woke up complaining of stomach pain. Her whines quickly turned into intense screams! Talk about total chaos!
We took Tori to the Emergency Medical Team at Sonshine, who suspected she had minor dehydration and put her on an IV. Unfortunately, she continued to scream in pain as well as vomit repeatedly, and so the EMT recommeded we take her to the hospital. So at about 1 a.m., we headed to the Wilmar Emergency center.
After an examination and xray, the doctor explained that Tori had a "serious bowel obstruction". I was quite shocked when he further explained that surgery may be the only way to remove and correct the blockage.
The doctor wasn't sure what was causing the blockage but suspected it was either appendix related, or some sort of "kink" in her intestines (either of which would likely require surgical intervention). He also pointed out on the xray how Tori's intestinal walls were the size of an adult's - nearly twice the normal diameter. This was because of the buildup of gas and waste caused by the blockage.
Meanwhile, Tori wasn't getting any better. What absolutely killed me was when amongst her screams of pain she pleaded, "Please make my stomach stop hurting."
My wife and I had been praying over Tori already, but following the xray results we now knew exactly what the problem was, and exactly what to pray for. Sitting beside Tori's hospital bed, I began praying specifically for "the blockage to dissolve" and for "things to pass through her system". I consciously turned the situation over to Jesus, claiming His healing power. I acknowledged that Tori is His child, and that I'm merely a steward over her. I put my Trust in Him and the situation in His hands.
I also praised God for *who He is* during the middle of this situation, and for all the things He's already done for us.
About 30 minutes after praying specifically for the healing of Tori's bowel obstruction, I heard the completely beautiful sound of... a toot! I realize it sounds humorous, but the fact that Tori was able to pass gas was extremely encouraging. As the doctor had explained, her xray showed that literally no gas was escaping past the point of obstruction.
I continued to lay hands on Tori and pray for her. She was scheduled to have a CAT scan to determine the exact cause of the blockage. I prayed that the CAT scan would be normal, and that Tori would soon have a bowel movement.
After a couple hours - and quite a bit more tooting! - Tori quietly announced she had to "go number two", and so I walked her to the bathroom. Let's just say that it quickly became OBVIOUS things were now passing through her system. Thank God!
After receiving the results of the CAT scan from the radiologist, Tori's doctor came into our room and told us that "everything looked normal." Praise the Lord!
Tori wasn't given any laxatives, or anything with the intention of potentially relieving her blockage, because they'd been waiting on the results of the CAT scan to better assess the situation. I give ALL the glory to God for providing his healing touch in this situation!
We headed back to our camp site at around 7 a.m. that morning, and were able to get a few hours of sleep in before enjoying our final day at SonShine. When Tori woke up, the first words out of her mouth were: "Jesus healed me."
Praise Him In The Storm ... And Praise Him Always! |
